Tire Care for your Summer Trips

Tire Care for your Summer Trips

It is estimated that Americans travel approximately 1,045 miles on average when reaching their summer vacation destination. With just a bit of summer left, if you haven’t taken a trip yet, there are some things you should do to make your trip a bit smoother.

Before leaving for a trip the tires on your traveling vehicle should be checked for tread depth, tire pressure and any visible damage or wear and tear on the tires. Less than half of Americans say they actually check their tires before leaving on a trip. Be sure to include your spare tire when performing your pre-trip check. While on your trip, park in the shade whenever possible. For every 10 degrees increase in temperature your tire pressure can raise 1 psi. If your tires have not been rotated recently, consider having them rotated before you leave. Tires should be rotated approximately every 7,000 miles or every 6 months. Be sure your vehicle is not overloaded as this can cause your tires to wear more quickly. Don’t leave without making sure that you have the proper tools including a lug wrench and a jack, to address any tire issues you hit while on the road.

Don’t neglect other parts of your car before traveling. Be sure to check fluids and your brakes pads and shoes. When you’ve returned from your wonderful vacation, be sure you don’t neglect your regular maintenance. You may have driven more than normal, making your next oil change or tire rotation just around the corner.
