Navistar Using Cummins Engines

Navistar International has its first heavy duty rig outfitted with a Cummins engine. The rig came off the production line this week. It was built at the company’s plant in Mexico. The Cummins engine is designed to meet emissions standards with less pollution.

Navistar originally planned to build its own engine to meet the tighter emission standards. After 3 years of a failed development effort, the company opted to abandon its efforts and instead purchase their engines from Cummins, based out of Indiana. The struggle to build a diesel engine that met the emissions standards ended up spelling the demise of Navistar’s from CEO, Dan Ustian. He had spearheaded the engine development efforts.

The new plan involving the Cummins engine is part of Navistar’s plan to set the company on the right track. The strategy suggests the efforts should show measurable results in the next 12-18 months. Navistar is not giving up on its engine production plans. Beginning in March a pilot production plan goes into effect to produce smaller engines, ramping up to full production in April.
