Humane Society Hits the Road in an RV

A Reading, PA, humane society has decided it’s time for a little RV touring – and yes, they’re taking the pets with them.

On April 9, the Humane Society of Berks County unveiled their new VetMobile and Mobile Adoption Center, an RV that has been transformed into a wellness clinic on wheels for pets. The VetMobile will begin touring the community next month in an effort to provide basic preventative care to area pet owners who are unable to make it to a vet.

In order to modify the RV’s interior, society staff members ripped up the carpets and installed vinyl flooring, replaced a sofa and bed with six animal cages, and added an x-ray machine, exam table, and other medical equipment.

The $200,000 VetMobile project was paid for by donations and grants. Interestingly, a full quarter of the cost was covered by a grant from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Treating Animals With Kindness program, which was created after the notorious quarterback Michael Vick – who did jail time for running a dogfighting ring – signed on with the team.

According to HSBC executive director Karel Minor, the VetMobile will also be available statewide as a mobile veterinary hospital in the event of a major emergency situation.
