Happy Birthday National Park Service

The National Park Service turns 96 this year and in celebration they are hosting celebrations from coast to coast. The date of the celebration is August 25th.

The National Park Service Director is encouraging everyone to participate. There are events planned to make the event especially appealing to families with children. Some of the events planned in parks across the United States include bike rides, special hikes, kayak tours and more. Many events provide opportunities for both fun and learning. Some of the more educational activities planned include archeological digs, blacksmith demos and a living history encampment.

The Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado links the birthday celebration with the park’s 6th annual BioBlitz. This 24 hour event has teams of volunteers exploring the park to identify species of plants, fungi and other organisms. Guests can also enjoy live music and science demonstrations as part of the day’s activities.

Check out the National Park Service’s website at www.nps.gov to see a listing of parks and events. The Park Service is hoping that guests will visit their special birthday website, www.NPSbirthday.org to share pictures or stories of trips to any National Parks or to send birthday wishes.

The United States is home to 397 National Parks. The 96th birthday of the National Park Service is a great opportunity to thank the Park Service for all they do to preserve these parks and keep them the treasure that they are for all Americans.
