Explore the Buffalo River

The Buffalo River runs through the Ozarks in northern Arkansas. The mile travels for 151 miles and is a popular destination for camping, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding and more.

The river was once called the Buffalo Fork of the White River. It starts in the Boston Mountains and eventually connects with the White River near Buffalo City. In many areas, the river is lined with bluffs up to 500 feet tall. There are caves and waterfalls and other beautiful geological wonders all along the way.

Much of the river is protected due to its designation as a national river. In fact, the Buffalo River was the first national river in the country. There are over 100 miles of maintained trails along the river. Horse back riding is allowed on about 50 miles of those trails. Float trips are also very popular, by raft, canoe or kayak. Parts of the river are mild with quiet water, perfect for gliding along and enjoying the landscape. Other areas have rapids and faster running water.

Take time to visit the Tyler Bend Visitor Center. Visitors can enjoy the center’s museum which displays artifacts from the area including photos, fossils and the history of the river.

The river draws more than 1 million visitors each year. Many come for the float trips but also for the fishing, hiking and other outdoor pursuits.
