Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

Last year was the 40th anniversary of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. As part of the festivities, a world record was set for the most hot air balloons launched in a one hour period. The record was set on October 1st as 345 balloons took flight during what is called the Mass Ascension. In total, over the span of the nine day event, 700 balloons were launched.

This year’s fiesta is being held from October 6th through October 14th. Some of the planned events include the annual mass ascension, a special shapes rodeo and balloon glows. Some of the events have been traditions for the festival and thus are repeated every year.

Albuquerque, New Mexico is the perfect location for the fiesta because of its unique weather pattern. The pattern is called the Albuquerque Box. It includes predictable winds which flow southerly at low elevations and northerly at high elevations. This ‘box’ allows balloonists to navigate in a fairly predictable pattern.

Traveling to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in an RV is an ideal way to enjoy the event. There are sites in the area with water and electric hookups available offering great viewing for the events. Check the festival’s website at for more information.
