Living in an RV was not really known for being an eco-friendly activity. Like any other vehicle, it consumes gas and adds to pollution that may destroy the environment. Nonetheless, RVing is one of the best retirement activities one can enjoy. Not only has it promoted the beauty of the planet but it also makes up for the extra time of people during summer and Christmas vacation.

On the other hand, there are still ways that RV owners can help the betterment of Mother Earth.

Composting Toilets

Some boats and cabins uses composting toilets. These kind of toilets use small amount of water than those usual toilets and some even use nothing at all. Ideally, these are intended for those who can’t access to sewer or septic tank especially in areas prone to drought. Fortunately, composting toilets are already available for RVs.

These toilet produces no odor. The secret to this is the aerobic decomposition being used by this system. The oxygen facilitates the process , using microbes to work those solids. Meanwhile, 90% of water contained inside evaporates in the venting system. The result, instead of sewage, soil is produced.

Solar Energy

Harnessing the energy of the sun can also be adapted by RV users. Solar kit are available in the market, and they are compatible with RVs because these panels produces DC power, the same power RV uses. Although solar panels may come at a price, considering the saving it can produce at long term run and its help to the environment, these are worth giving a try for.

Biodiesel

Using biodiesel is still the friendliest thing an RV user can contribute to the environment. These don’t come cheap in price, but if you are a eco-loving RV owner, then give this a shot.

Live a Simple Life

Living a simple life as it is can save you a lot of fortune and trees. Although RVing can be fun, try to consider doing this on scheduled plan. Bring along your bikes during vacation, and use them when you plan on staying in a camp. That way, it lowers your fuel consumption and gives you a time savouring the traditional way of having fun.

RVers or not, these small activities can help in easing Mother Earth.

Travelling is not always all fun and happiness. It can be intimidating at times when things go wrong. That is why planning ahead of time is recommended for travellers. It can save time, effort and stress from those adventure crashes.

1. Look out for Deals

Getting a coupon for a night of a life time dinner in Paris can save your pocket from those costly restaurants, and expensive hotels. Not to mention that the internet is full of this life saving deals that can come in handy for savvy people out there. Sites like Groupon and LivingSocial are the two of the most sought out places for finding affordable activities.

2. Check the Route

Unbeknown to us, there are some events and places that are definitely to try for. Unfortunately, they don’t advertise themselves so well that people often overlook them. Do a thorough search on GPS and maps, and maybe some great restaurants will emerge from these.

3. Check for mechanical problems

Checking on the engines of your car or RV, can save you a lot of trouble from doing extra pay for towing and mechanic. Make sure that the tires are fine, and everything is in the right order. Make it a habit to check the engines of your vehicle.

4. Check the time

The best time for an out of town trip is definitely around morning, where the roads are clear of traffic, and the air is cool from morning dews. Don’t plan for a trip and do last minute packing. You may find yourself in the road during rush hours, and before you know it, the day is over.

5. Be flexible

Unexpected things usually occur in the road and nobody will notify you. It just happens as it is.

• Make your research about the weather. The following days may not be perfect for trekking adventures in the mountain or fishing in the bays.
• Check the traffic updates. Some roads can be a problem. Better avoid them. Some roads may also close due to parades and such. Be prepared for these kind of events.
Whatever happens, don’t fret. The best memories sometimes happen from those unplanned circumstances.

Ever thought about getting your own GPS (Global Positioning System)? Well, this can be challenging especially for starters. There are different brands and great models to choose from. There are always these new great features and functions that are available in the market and you can only pick one. It can be hard and nerve-racking. But you can always have the right one if you know what specific purpose you want this to serve you.

GPS – What is it?

GPS (Global Positioning System) is basically the navigator tool and precise positioning mechanism built by the Department of Defense around 1973. It was intended to aid the military vehicles like ships and planes, and even soldiers in determining their place.

As the world evolved into a greater phase, the GPS developed into a tool not only to assists the military in combat but also to assist normal people in most of their recreational activities, like hiking, kayaking, and fishing.

This article, to be specific is about choosing the right GPS RV’ers.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT GPS?

A simple question will solve everything. Ask yourself why you want to have this.
An automotive unit of GPS will definitely inform you how you can reach any specific place. This is must-have tool for any RV’ers around so they can track their location and not get lost in the oblivion. Consider the following in choosing the GPS:

Maps

Some GPS holds specific maps and roads. Others contain data for the whole United States of America, while some may only load the data of Northern America. It varies usually. Some are programmed to include the whole map of the every countries in the world, which can be really flexible if you are touring around the world.

Memory Capacity

Another good feature to look for is the memory capacity. You may want to expand the data your GPS have but the memory has reached its limit. Buying Secure Digital card (SD card) can do the trick nonetheless. It is affordable and available for most units.

GPS with Speakers

Another good feature you must look for is it has built-in speakers that voice out the directions. This can be pretty handy for those who don’t want to take a glance on their GPS while driving.

Live Traffic Service

Knowing the traffic can aid a lot in your driving. It can save time and less hassle. Having a Live Traffic Service will enable you to take an alternative road if the road you are supposed to take is blocked.

Those are the features you should look for. They come useful especially for RV’ers.

Check out the selection of GPS Handheld devices on Amazon.

Donald Shultz of North Royalton, Ohio shared his quick tips for RV’ing.

After a day he spent with his coach, Schultz returned home one late evening and noticed two lower foldout steps illuminated by the amber light that lighted up the entry door is opened. However, it didn’t miss his attention that top three steps inside the entry are not lit. He resolute then to buy a small amber maker light from an auto-parts store and installed it on the second step inside and connected the wires to the light behind the lower two steps. This made all five steps illuminated once the entry door is opened.

Meanwhile, when he adjusted his motorhome’s steering wheel to a secure position, the move blocks the purview of the turn-signal lights in the dashboard. To settle the issue, he purchased two diminutive lights at an auto-parts store and installed them in the upper corners of the dash and connected them to the existing turn-signal wires.

He started looking for something that would keep the cover of his motorhome from tearing when he heard a lot of stories about how those covers get tattered from various scratching. He found some affordable foam kneepads with elastic straps at a home improvement store in the end. He used them on awning ends, wiper blade arms, generator and the engine exhaust pipe.

Outside accessible storage space can be helpful especially it helps in decluttering space-hungry gears that some people usually store in their RV’s interior storage cabinet. But, the thing is this section is a boon to “low-lifes” and rip-off artists of the society.

Image Source: The Fun Times Guide

Here is a little catch. Your key ring to that storage compartment is something anyone who owns an RV has. Look at the number stamped on it. Some people own the same stamped key like you do.

Regarding that. Your entry door does have a locking mechanism with two place that lock the door – one on the handle and one to throw the deadbolt. The one that locks the handle is marked with C or E, and guess what, it is a universal type of lock. Meaning that if I own an RV and has a passkey, I can easily open that. Anyone may open it.

To make up for this flaw, you have to use install a deadbolt lock. Aside from that, RVs built in the 1956 can be easily open with an ordinary screwdriver or any dime, so check out yours and see for yourself.
Now if a thief have an access to those stored compartments, gaining an entry inside would be not much difficult. So take a good look on your trailer or motorhome. Check everything. The roof vent which could be ripped off easily. And we all know that there is a convenient ladder on the back of the trailer that could be used.

Take the matter of compartment door, which is usually made of aluminium frame. It usually has a skin of sheet aluminium on the exterior and maybe, some insulation between an inner skin of the aluminium. A hard kick can definitely broke that door. And don’t be so sure about the locking mechanism with the tab that slide through. A flat bar can do the trick.

We should never be too sure. We are never too sure. Everyone should be minding about their own safety and try to think like a thief would do.

Make sure that valuables are kept somewhere safe, preferably, in a safe. And consider about installing alarms. A little money would not harm you.

Anthony is among many who owns an RV with the gray and black water trap valve placed under the RV and find reaching and cleaning it very difficult. With the solution he found, he was able to reach this trap valve without getting on his knees.

According to him, he went to Home Depot and bought a 30-inch sprinkler valve key for only $3.50. He then bent the fork end in a 90-degree angle to the handle. From then on, he uses the bended fork end to pull the slide valve open and to push it close, too.

Something Missing RV

This RV is weird in all ways. Yes, the gap that you see on the picture is real in this class C motor-home. With this on the picture, you are sure to have no kitchen, no bathroom and the like in this type of weird RV.

The Happy Camper

Who knows that a camper can make people so happy? Apparently this camper is an all in one camper that can store a hammock, a bike, a bed and pretty much everything else in between. Just make sure that you are not the type of person who wants to live in an ultra-wide and very luxurious RV.

The Compact RV

While there are those that would never camp without taking things that can make them feel the comforts of their own homes, it must be noted that there are those who do not mind as long as they have efficient system to help them get by. Take the case of this RV with no frills and just the basics.

The Superlong RV

While there are those who can live with nothing but the basics, there are those who want everything while out on the road. Take the case of this long RV spotted at Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Washington. Considering how long it is, you are sure to have everything that you would need and more in this RV.

The Sticker Crazy RV

Stickers are okay if you put them in the fridge but too much sticker on an RV makes it weird. While the owner may be sticker-crazy and is overly satisfied with how his current rig looks like, he or she will surely regret it when the time comes to sell the RV arises and the stickers would be one of the reasons behind the low price. But who knows, it might get into the hands of another sticker crazy who would kill to have an RV filled with stickers.

Restored RVs

If restoring vintage RV is weird and this is definitely one heck of a weird RV. People near Sonomo County may want to check out RV models in his RV restoration shop. Entering this place is like stepping in an RV museums. Give the place a visit and who knows, you might find an RV there that you may want to own.

Wooden RV

A woody station wagon may not be entirely weird but it is definitely one of a kind. Think of using this kind of wagon as you travel and camp. The teardrop shape makes it easy and efficient to take along with you in your tow. The exterior embodies weird rustic charm!

Navette Motorhome

This may look like a bullet train from Japan but this RV is 100% American. Its water resistant feature and its excellent fuel economy may seem regular though it must be noted that its aerodynamic look makes it a bit strange compared to all other RVs in the market.

Utra-wide RV

Factory made or home made, this wide RV looks real strange on the outside. This is one of the many RVs featured at the Langley Good Times Cruise In Car Show.
